How To Reduce The Critical Voice Within

Ways To Support Healthy Communication Within Yourself

We all have an Inner Critic, and experience the voice that tells us what we should be doing, and how we should be doing it.

It may compare us, unfavourably, to other people.

It may tell us that we are slow, or stupid, or ugly, or unlovable.

It may say things like:

"I can't do it."

"I'm not good enough."

"Things never work out for me."

"I'm just unlucky."

"Nobody likes me."

"I'll never be able to do that!"

"I haven't got what it takes."

"Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways."

Sigmund Freud

Often, these criticisms of ourselves have been picked up from the outside world as we are going through life, and have no basis in fact.

Rather than try to get rid of this voice, you may find it helpful to create a New Voice - the INNER COACH.

This voice says things like:

"Well done."

"Good effort."

"I'm doing the best I can."

"I'm doing well."

"I can!"

"I will!"

"We are all different and unique."

"We all develop differently, and at different speeds."

"I can definitely do this!"

"I will find a way."

"Come on mate, you're doing really well!"

"Real freedom is the ability to pause between stimulus and response, and in that pause, choose."

Rollo May

You can use any supportive phrase you want to choose, ones which work best for you, and then make that Inner Coach Voice your GO-TO voice.

Gradually, you can learn to encourage and praise yourself as if you are talking to the small child version of yourself.
